Frequently Asked Questions
AUTHENTICATING A HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC ARTWORK

Determining whether an artwork is an authentic work by HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC requires rigorous physical, technical, and historical examination. Lautrec's iconic Post-Impressionist output spans Montmartre cabaret scenes, theater portraits, brothel vignettes, oil-on-cardboard paintings (peinture à l'essence), gouaches, drawings, and seminal color lithographic posters—each characterized by fluid calligraphic line handling, radical cropping, exposed cardboard substrates, distinct lithographic stone states, and signature habits.

We offer official authentication assessments, Certificates of Authenticity (COAs), physical condition and technical reports, professional appraisals and market valuations, provenance reconstruction, private sales representation, and specialized Post-Impressionist art advisory.

Yes. Lautrec produced thousands of rapid drawings, cafe sketches, working lithographic proofs, and oil-on-cardboard studies during his feverish years in Paris. Unrecorded works on paper, preliminary poster studies, and small oil sketches gifted to contemporary Montmartre friends or performers occasionally re-emerge from private European collections.

Formal authentication is required to establish undisputed market legitimacy, achieve full value upon sale, secure institutional insurance coverage, settle estate tax liabilities, and support art-collateralized financing.

The initial evaluation process is straightforward. You only need to supply high-resolution photography—including close-ups of line handling, paint fluidity, cardboard support or paper watermarks, red atelier stamps or monogram signatures ("HTL"), edition details for lithographs, and overall views—along with dimensions and documented ownership history.

Timeline depends on technical scope and archival availability. Standard reviews take several weeks, while complex cases involving French gallery searches, M.G. Dortu catalogue raisonné cross-referencing, edition state analysis for rare prints, or laboratory material testing can take several months.

Fees depend on the extent of archival research required, geographical location of primary records, and whether specialized laboratory testing (e.g., cardboard acidity/fiber testing, paper watermark identification, FTIR pigment analysis) is necessary.

No. Lautrec is one of the most frequently forged 19th-century French artists. Forged signatures and copied red circle monograms ("HTL") are routinely added to period-appropriate paper or cardboard, posthumous print restrikes, or contemporary imitations.

Yes. A substantial number of Lautrec's working studies, sketchbook pages, and personal oil-on-cardboard compositions remained unsigned during his lifetime. At his death in 1901, many remaining studio works received a red stamp featuring his monogram.

Essential records include inclusion in M.G. Dortu's catalogue raisonné (Toulouse-Lautrec et son œuvre), Gotthard Jedlicka or Loys Delteil print catalogues, historical French dealer archives (e.g., Maurice Joyant, Manzi-Joyant, Galerie Boussod & Valadon), and records from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi.

Yes. Initial remote evaluation can be performed using high-resolution digital photography to assess brush fluidity, line speed, cardboard texture, ink stone registration, and stamp morphology. If findings are promising, a physical inspection is arranged.

Scientific testing is strongly recommended for major Lautrec painting attributions. Techniques such as cardboard support fiber analysis, spectroscopic pigment testing (verifying thin turps-thinned oil washes / peinture à l'essence), and paper watermark analysis for prints provide crucial empirical proof.

Gaps in provenance are common for late 19th and early 20th-century French works due to informal Montmartre sales and WWII displacements. Where paper trails are incomplete, evaluation leans heavily on forensic material testing, comparative stylistic study against catalogued museum works, and targeted archival research.

Yes. Upon successful completion of the authentication process, we issue an official Certificate of Authenticity (COA) accompanied by a detailed technical and historical report.

APPRAISALS & VALUATIONS

Appraisal values are calculated based on subject matter and period (celebrated Montmartre performers like Jane Avril, La Goulue, and Aristide Bruant command peak market prices), medium (monumental oil on canvas/cardboard vs. drawing/gouache vs. rare early poster/print state), scale, condition, level of finish, and recent auction benchmarks.

SELLING A TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

Yes. We offer confidential private placement services connecting sellers directly with major international institutions, specialized Post-Impressionist collectors, and private foundations.

An independent appraisal ensures that your artwork is accurately valued for current market demand, protecting you against under-selling while optimizing positioning among serious buyers.

Yes. Premier auction houses, institutions, and high-value buyers require verified authentication, catalogue raisonné standing (Dortu / Delteil number), and clear title verification before committing capital.

We maximize net return by presenting fully authenticated works directly to active global Post-Impressionist and 19th-century masterwork buyers, utilizing museum-grade technical documentation, and minimizing intermediary commission structures.

In general, no. Lautrec's fragile oil-on-cardboard works and unvarnished paper surfaces require extreme care. Acidic cardboard backing or fragile gouache layers can easily suffer permanent damage during improper treatment. Works should be evaluated in present condition.

Private placement timelines generally take a few weeks to several months, allowing adequate time to conduct due diligence, present the work to targeted buyers, and complete contract agreements.

BUYING & ADVISORY

Lautrec remains a cornerstone figure of French Post-Impressionism and modern graphic design history. We provide detailed market trend analysis, valuation metrics, and risk assessments for prospective buyers.

Yes. We offer independent due diligence for prospective buyers, including physical condition audits (evaluating cardboard acidification or lithograph paper margins/sun-fading), forensic material checks, title/provenance review, and market price validation.

Three core factors are essential: verified authenticity (catalogue raisonné status and material match), physical condition (evaluating cardboard structural integrity, print state/edition, and color preservation), and clear legal title.

Engage independent Post-Impressionist specialists to conduct scientific pigment and support analysis, verify print edition/lithographic stone marks, cross-reference entries in M.G. Dortu / Delteil catalogues raisonnés, and confirm clear ownership title prior to purchase.

Yes. We assist private collectors, family offices, and institutions with valuation updates, climate-controlled storage guidance, conservation oversight, and long-term estate planning.
